Excellent film - THE COUNTERFEITERS

I found Die Fälscher (The Counterfeiters) well worth the trouble of reading the English subtitles. It's an excellent movie about the Nazi effort to counterfeit British and US money during WW II. I highly recommend this outstanding film. I saw it today at The Four Arts.

Saint Patrick's Day

Yesterday we went to the Saint Patrick's Day parade in Lake Worth.

Last night we volunteered at the Kravis for Legally Blonde: The Musical. It was well sold and seemed to be well received but I didn't care much for the show.
Jane left this morning for California to visit with her daughter, Kelly.

City Walk

We had 15 walkers today on Lake Trail in Palm Beach.

John Prince Park Picnic

This afternoon we enjoyed a windy picnic in John Prince park with Doris & Roy, Laura & Richard, and Jim & Betty, and Barb & Dick.

Two Movies - The Reader & GranTorino

We saw The Reader last night and Gran Torino tonight. Of the two, I preferred The Reader and highly recommend it. The many and prolonged sex scenes made me uncomfortable. It wouldn't have hurt the story to leave most of them out. It was an excellent and engaging story that took place in Germany after WWII and up to the present.
Gran Torino was also a good story but I felt the script and directing should have been better. Still, I recommend it.

Today for lunch we entertained Marcia & Ed Fee and Al Barash. Jane made hot chicken salad and lemon meringue pie. We enjoyed our guests and they seemed to have a good time.

Sea Cloud

Last night at the Historical Society of Palm Beach County lecture series we enjoyed the lecture "Majorie Merriweather Post's Sea Cloud -- the Storybook Tale of a Legendary Ship."

Oh Hell!

Oh hell! -- That was our game of choice last night. Cheri trounced the field of five players.

Also yesterday morning after Paul's aerobic walk in John Prince Park we went to Kofski Antiques' estate sale where many of the once-wealthy victims of Bernard Madoff's ponzi scheme were selling off their treasures. Living In this area are very many formerly wealthy people who were wiped out by the scam.

Movie and Concert

Today at The Four Arts we saw My Best Friend (Mon meilleur ami), a delightful French comedy with subtitles. We needed this lighter film after so many serious ones. It was perfect especially for me about someone without friends being taught how to have friends.

Tuesday we ushered at the Kravis for The Neville Brothers and Dr. John & The Lower 911. The patrons seemed to love it but I and several other ushers hated it. I felt sorry for myself having to be there.

Wednesday at the Armory Arts Center we attended a really fine lecture and slide show on the Art Deco architecture of India.

Movie & Talent Show

The Children of Huang Shi is about a young British journalist, George Hogg, who with the assistance of a courageous Australian nurse and a Chinese partisan fighter, saves a group of orphaned children during the Japanese occupation of China in 1937. Those viewing the movie with me today at The Four Arts thought it was wonderful. It was too long (125 min.) for my comfort but not nearly long enough to adequately tell this epic true story. I recommend it but with several reservations.

This evening we attended a talent show at BAK Middle School of the Arts. I expected too much but it was okay and we enjoyed it.

A Jew Grows in Brooklyn

At the Cuillo Centre this afternoon we enjoyed and recommend A Jew Grows in Brooklyn. A year ago we saw this one-man show and today we enjoyed just as much.

Luncheon and Movie

Luncheon this afternoon with some of our favorite people was a treat for us. Pete & Sandra Holmes along with John Knobloch & Kathryn Schultz were delightful guests.

Friday night at The Four Arts we viewed the movie Under the Same Moon. It is an excellent Mexican film involving illegal immigration from Mexico from a sympathetic perspective. I highly recommend it.

City Walk

It was overcast and cool this morning but our ten walkers had an enjoyable walk through downtown West Palm Beach.

Valentines Day

We've had a busy week.
This morning at The Society of the Four Arts we both enjoyed a gallery talk on the current exhibit: Great Expectations: Aristocratic Children in European Portraiture.
Yesterday: First, we attended a screening of The War Within -- an an enlightening depiction of Muslim-American life. It deals with the origins of and reasons for present terrorism. This is an important message film but not, in my opinion, entertaining or enjoyable. Next , we went to Pan's Garden Musicale: The Florida Brass and then, finally, The Palm Beach Jewelery, Art & Antique Show. It is terrific.
Thursday: We volunteered at the Red Cross Designers Showcase House.
Tuesday we saw Lily Tomlin at the Kravis.

Two Fine Movies

Last night we viewed two of the well reviewed new movies.
Milk staring Sean Pen is the story of California's first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk. We liked it and recommend it. The folks that need to see this, probably won't and that's too bad.

I absolutely loved Doubt. The doubt is never resolved but I was so delighted with the character portrayals in this film, I didn't want it to end.

Larry and Leslie's Visit

Larry and Leslie Chlebeck of Nalcrest honored us with an overnight visit. We had a good time and Saturday night Pat Barnes joined us in a protracted game of Mexican Train.

Movie Comment

Friday at The Society of the Four Arts we viewed Mongol.
It is an epic film recounting the early life of Genghis Khan. It is a love story with as much bloody violence as I have ever seen in one movie. I recommend it for the gargantuan effort to make this movie, but understand it is very long and confusing because so much was cut out to condense it.

One Opera in One Hour - - & Horses all in the same day

We had a great day yesterday at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. These are are a few of the pictures I took.

Last night Jane and I attended an opera --- Don Giovanni by Mozart. But not your normal production. This was called One Opera in One Hour and it was presented free of charge by the Palm Beach Opera in CityPlace at the Harriet Himmel Theater. I recommend you watch for these performances: LE NOZZE DI FIGARO - February 21, 2009 at 9:00 PM and LA BOHEME - March 7, 2009 at 9:00 PM.

Terrific Movie

This afternoon at The Society of the Four Arts we viewed the movie, Goya's Ghosts.
The painter Goya becomes involved with the Spanish Inquisition when his muse, Ines, is arrested by the church for heresy. Her father, Thomas, comes to him hoping that his connection with Brother Lorenzo, whom he is painting, can secure the release of his daughter. This is probably the best movie movie I've seen this year. I highly recommend it but you must understand you will become emotionally involved and troubled. It is very heavy. After this, see a comedy film.
