Gooseberry, Tettegouche

We drove up the north shore today and showed Gooseberry Falls to Kelly and hiked to Shovel point at Tettegouche State Park.

Fish Boil

The Chancellor's Fish Boil, our biggest social event of the summer, was last night, Tuesday. There was a big crowd and we had a good time.

Tischer Creek Hike

We started out with fourteen hikers and ended up with twelve. One of the lovelist hikes is only a few blocks from UMD. I recommend Tischer Creek trail near Mount Royal shopping center. Yesterday we took Kelly to canal park then to a concert.

A Day at John's Lake

John Knobloch and Kathryn Schultz were host and hostess for a wonderful day at John's cabin on Bear Lake. Pictured are all twelve friends including Kelly, Jane's daughter. Breakfast featured the best waffles I ever tasted and the "supper to be remembered," equally fine, starred burgers from John's grill. With good cruising, hiking, storytelling, and socializing, we hated to leave.

We experienced more FinnFest events today. The president of Finland was awarded an honorary doctorate this morning by UMD.
Kelly arrived from California in the late afternoon.

FinnFest 2008

Last night we attended the opening ceremony of the 25th annual FinnFest. The whole program was thrilling with many speakers and exciting entertainment. Video of Opening Video II

Garden Tour

Yesterday morning we had a delightful tour of the most beautiful home flower garden I have ever seen. It has been featured in many publications and the most recently on the cover of Better Homes and Gardens Special Interest magazine. Hike and Concert

Seventeen hikers, including our leader, Bill Delboy, enjoyed a beautiful cool morning in Lester Park.

At the First United Methodist Church this evening we enjoyed a wonderful handbell concert by Strikepoint.

VIEW PROGRAM

Strikepoint has toured to England, Scotland, Wales, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Japan, New England, New Orleans, Los Angeles, the Great Lakes, Canada, Washington D.C., the Pacific Northwest, through the Heartland, and the desert Southwest.

Danger Lurks Under Lake Superior.

The second annual Walk & Rally for the Lake was held today. We walked about five miles to where the rally was held. They were especially protesting the lack of attention given to the dumping into Lake Superior in the late 1950s and early 1960s of as many as 1,448 barrels of toxic and radioactive waste.

Airshow

Today we went to the Duluth Airshow. When the weather turned bad, we left early and then went to a really wonderful piano recital at the Weber.

Wall Climbing

Vista Cruise

This evening we had a nice cruise aboard the Vista Star. We stayed mostly in the harbor because the lake was a bit rough. We had a good time with friends.

Last night we played Sequence and Four Card Golf with Barbara and Harry Schuster. The night before we played Beyond Balderdash and Dice with Mary and Evert House.

Anyone There?

Is anyone out there? Let me hear from you. Suspecting that no one is reading, I've become lazier and less inspired to write. I'm hoping your comments might encourage more insightful and thoughtful commentary. Note the new COMMENTS link: (look up right)

The other night Jane and I watched a rented documentary movie called Stone Reader. I can't give it a general recommendation but we found it quite engaging. It's about the search for an author of a very well reviewed first book who seemed to have disappeared and was never heard from. The movie could never be a commercial success but book lovers and those interested in publishing might enjoy it.

Monday Hike

Twenty hikers enjoyed the beautiful cool morning on the Lakewalk in Two Harbors. We were also treated to the viewing of the docking of the oar boat, Presque Isle. View Video

The Pursuit of Happiness

We had a delightful evening with Bill and Sandra last night watching the fireworks from the Radisson's revolving restaurant in the sky. The weather was perfect.

Keeping Busy

Tuesday we had a tour of Jay Cooke State Park. Wednesday we ushered for a local production of Agatha Christie's play, The Mousetrap. With challenging exercise classes every day, we're really getting fit.
